Hey! I'm Amber...
Some people dream of fame and fortune...I dream of toucans. Literally. I hear them in my dreams.
4 years ago I was living with a small indigenous tribe in the Ecuadorian jungle leading tours at their ecolodge - one of the tours that I led was piranha fishing. Before my favorite 16 year-old native guide yelled at me that I needed to pay better attention to my fishing pole, I spent a lot of time pointing out monkeys, identifying bird calls, and coaxing baby piranhas to the surface with cookie crumbs for everyone's entertainment.
After Ecuador I worked as a park ranger leading tours in Everglades and Denali National Parks. I loved them both, but I missed Latin culture, speaking Spanish, and of course: toucans.
So the day before my 29th birthday I set out to explore/volunteer/see toucans in Central America. I was loving life in Guatemala when my trip was abruptly cut short when my atm card was cloned in Mexico. After cancelling the card I sat around waiting for the new card to arrive...I waited...and waited...and waited. Eventually I made the decision to fly home to pick up the new card (I was planning a visit home 1.5 months later anyway). Upon tasting the amazing delicious food that the US has to offer, I decided to make the US part of my trip and set off on a 3-week road trip across the south and midwest. I visited 12 states and saw over 20 friends and 13 family members (5 of whom I hadn't seen in 15 years). The main thing I heard from everyone was "you never update Facebook and we have no idea where you are or what crazy adventure you're currently on!" And so...this blog was born.
And...welcome.
